WHO WE ARE. We are a Vancouver-based transcription firm specializing in the transcription of academic research interviews and focus groups. Most of the work we get is transcription of interviews and groups for PhD research for universities. POSITION. You would be working on your own computer at home transcribing digital audio files via the internet 4 hours a day 4-5 days a week for a total of 16 to 20 hours per week. You can work any 4 days of the week that you like, as long as it's 4 HOURS PER DAY FOR 4 CONSECUTIVE DAYS PER WEEK. You can work exclusively weekdays or a mix of weekdays and days on the weekend. Although you must be able to work 4 hours per day, you should not plan to work more than that on any one day. This is an ideal position for stay-at-home moms and students because we don't care what time of day you work, as long as you put in the required hours. You would be working as an independent contractor. We are looking for people who would like to stay with us for at least a year, not just as a temporary position. QUALIFICATIONS. You must live in CANADA, preferably in the lower mainland of BC. English must be your native language and you must have excellent English, spelling and grammar. A BA in Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Education, English Literature or History is helpful, but not essential. You must be well-read, with a broad eclectic knowledge in a wide variety of areas, as the topics we get for transcription are wide and varied. You must type 65+ wpm and be expert in MS Word, the internet & email. Experience transcribing interviews or focus groups and using Express Scribe digital audio transcription software is helpful but not essential. Please note that we do not hire people who have another full time job because this is too demanding to do after working a full day at another job. We also do not hire people who are in and out of temporary positions, because we need to be able to rely on our staff on a regular basis. EQUIPMENT. You must have Word 2000 or later and an IBM compatible computer, not a Mac, because the software required to do the transcription will not run on a Mac. You must have a high-speed wired internet connection, not Lite or Wireless, in order to download the digital audio files. WORKFLOW. Although the workflow is usually fairly steady, it does tend to fluctuate somewhat because the work we get is project-based and comes from a variety of clients. Our busiest times of year are mid-October to mid-February and July and August. However, it can be exceptionally busy in what should be quiet times and vice versa. Since the income can fluctuate, we advise that you should have another source of income sufficient to meet your basic needs and that you should consider this to be "discretionary" income. This works very well for stay-at-home moms, university students and people who have another stable part-time job with regular hours. RESUME. Please attach your resume and daytime telephone number, together with a note letting us know your transcription experience and how this position will fit into your current and future plans. Please also let us know which days you would like to work. As noted above, you can work any 4 days of the week that you like, as long as you can work 4 hours per day for 4 CONSECUTIVE days per week. You can work exclusively weekdays or a mix of weekdays and days on the weekend. Please note that we will not respond to requests for more information without a resume and daytime telephone number. If your resume is in Word 2007, please save it as Word 2003. Please attach your resume rather than inserting it into the body of the email. Click here to apply ... |
