Speech-to-Text Transcriber for Deaf and Hard of Hearing The Position Quality Transcription Specialists, L.L.C. (QTS) is recruiting individuals to work as speech-to-text transcribers who will provide real-time communication access for individuals who are Deaf and hard of hearing. The transcriber will be trained on specialized software using laptop computers to record information in complete English sentences to be viewed simultaneously by the student reader. Must be available to begin training by June 24 and begin working in classroom mid August. Responsibilities The candidate will listen to and type English from lectures in real-time, to people who are Deaf/hard of hearing who read real-time from a laptop computer. Transcriber will refine notes, omitting errors after class and email the transcript to end users within 24 hours. Minimum Requirements Must type at least 60 wpm. Excellent English skills. Two years of experience using word processing software. Ability to listen to and rapidly understand spoken English. Ability to rapidly restate into correctly formed English, the full meaning of what is heard in classes and meetings. High school diploma or G.E.D equivalent. Required Specialized Skills Excellent knowledge of English grammar, spelling and academic vocabulary. Ability to operate a laptop computer, and other peripheral equipment (i.e. copier and printer). Must be comfortable working in an academic setting with diverse populations. Able to work hours corresponding to students' schedules. MUST be able to dedicate approximately 90 hours to training sessions to learn use of specialized software program and transcribing skills. Salary and Schedule $15 per hour. A typical work week for this position can range from 15-30 hours per week. Must be available 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during school year with ability to work occasional night classes at college level.
